USAHA News United States Animal Health Association Contact: Larry Mark - (703) 451-3954 - ldmark@erols.com For immediate release: FORESIGHT PROJECT OUTLINED FOR COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS HERSHEY, Pa., Nov. 8, 2005 - A progress report on the Animal Health Foresight Project, a joint effort of Canada and the United States to look at alternatives to mass animal destruction in carrying out disease eradication programs, was the highlight of the second meeting of the joint Committee on International Standards of the U.S. Animal Health Association (USAHA) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) here this week. This study looks at ways to minimize destruction of animals in disease- elimination efforts. Details of the study will be released at a later date. Dr. Norman Willis, vice-chair of the committee and formerly with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), suggested that the results of this project could be extended to broader acceptance and development that could lead to global guidelines. ###
